Cross-Cradle Position

The Secrets to a Successful Latch

A good latch at the breast helps mother nurse comfortably and helps baby to remove milk effectively. There are a few secrets to a great latch. Nothing explains it better than seeing it visually explained so I've compiled these helpful videos. Be looking for a few of the secrets - holding baby tummy to tummy with mom (baby should NOT have hips facing the ceiling), bringing baby onto your breast with his/her lower jaw at the outer edge of the areola away from the nipple, and giving baby a quick firm "hug" deep onto the breast when s/he opens wide. I recommend latching using the cross-cradle position (see illustration) position, and then comfortably reclining. Check them all out!
